Response to “The law by SMS” by Andrew Heathcote BRW Septemebr Issue

Was reading the BRW and found this mini article on legal advice by text message. Legal firm JDRLEGAL who has operations both in Melbourne and Los Angeles, provides client advising services to clients mainly busy executives via sms i.e. mobile-phone messaging services. This is truly ‘computerisation of the law’ (our course name in action) Clients can ask specific questions or general advice and have that info beamed through on to the persons mobile phone. I believe this application has far reaching benefits in many situations – clients can get advice throughout the world as long as they have phone reception…so their lawyer is “with” them in every decision they make whether that is in Nairobi or New York. it also saves the client money as they do not need to plan face to face meeting with their lawyers. A great idea i must add.

Thats interesting. SMS as a means of communication would
be a bit brief and limiting. Perhaps they send multiple messages to convey something.

I would have thought that email would be easier given that these days may business executives carry blackberries or email enabled mobiles where you can email someone and they receive it on their palmheld device. In any case, it does sound like a good idea.

I was quite surprised to read a lawyer would use sms to give advice. I guess where you can communicate via sms, apart from emailing like Sachin mentioned above, you can also just as easily make a phone call. But sms-ing is fast and simple, and will definitely save the lawyer quite a bit on his phone bill.

One possible implication from this is is both the lawyer and the client may need to make sure their mobiles (or sms inboxes) are password protected in case any confidential information leaks out. Also, I wonder if a text message could be properly considered a written record of communications between the lawyer and his client(for legal purposes)?

Liz also wrote about this on her blog.
